Stayed in maternity overnight after laparoscopy. Well looked after through stay, however the ward was extremely loud at night with the nurse intercom/bell, talking etc.

My OBGYN wasn’t available on the day and therefore I wasn’t seen for a few hours after presenting to the hospital and my epidural took longer than I wanted but as I wasn’t in active labour I wouldn’t have received it any sooner - even though I wanted it sooner, I did receive other pain relief options. I received a fairly large out of pocket for the epidural.

Overall my experience giving birth at North West wasn’t what I expected but looking back now and after speaking with Kim from the hospital I can see that I had a pretty good experience even though I didn’t have the most normal first birth.

High recommend for maternity services. The midwives are amazing and show respect and care. Although the night staff appeared stretched and stressed, the day staff were patient and always took the time to answer questions and provide support. The physio who visited almost daily after my c-section was fabulous (so helpful and kind!) and the other support staff including the lactation consultant and paediatrician visited regularly and were wonderful also.

The midwifes on the ward were lovely and very experienced - my advice would be to limit visitors so that you can take advantage of everything at the hospital - ask questions and ask for help - also ask your OBGYN to stay extra time if you need it - I wish I stayed longer and left the hospital with better knowledge as home visits from midwifes are not available for private hospital patients - I wasn’t able to breast feed my daughter due to medical issues my milk didn’t come in - while I did see a lactation consultant at the hospital the day after birth I didn’t really have enough time to get the knack of feeding before leaving had I stayed some extra time this might have been different..

I required a emergency operation and the team handled it well and I felt cared for - a whole theatre team was called in very late at night - I didn’t have the most positive experience with the Anaesthetist for the emergency operation but I do have reactions to General Anaesthetic so this could have effected things for me as I am a difficult patient to treat without having a reaction - while I received a decent out of pocket of the anaesthetist I wasn’t billed any extra for the operation which was very surprising due to the amount of staff they needed.

As the partner of someone who had surgery (at middle age for the first time,) at the hospital all went well everyone from the front reception right through to ancillary staff, nurses and Doctors were great. Very clean and quiet hospital, would I recommend this hospital? yes!

I did skin to skin for 3.5hours after birth while this was too long for me, I’m sure many mothers would appreciate the length of time the hospital try’s to allow us to have with our babies.

I had some stand out positives about my experience these included the OBGYN who delivered our baby he was fantastic and I would highly recommend him to anyone (Dr Terry Sheahan) My OBGYN which was unavailable on the day but I would highly recommend him also (Dr Martin D’Arcy Evans)

The hospital does have a strong focus on student midwifes and ours was lovely - she took the time out of her day to come and see me the next morning after I gave birth - there were some issues with a emergency with one of my midwifes when I arrived at the hospital so it was a little hectic and I felt sort of left alone (but I am told this is out of the norm so I wouldn’t expect this next time and with the circumstances you have to be understanding to this) the birth suite is nice.

Overall experience for my good friend was terrible after surgery. She had a cyst removed in her throat and the drain snapped and was taped on. The doctor wasn't told to her knowledge even though he had requested the drain. She heard the nurses discuss it when she was coming out of the anaesthetic. The next day the nurses who removed the drain commented that it wasn't connected up properly and liquid started spurting out through the waterproof dressing then and leaking for the next few days. Nobody even checked on her to see if the drain was still connected after the surgery. Two weeks later, the wound was badly infected and caused her misery for a week. She had no sleep because the fluids drip machine kept beeping constantly every five minutes but they refused to replace it when she asked. On top of that she was outside the nurses station and the nurses were busy so the alarm was going off all night. She was not even asked for a cup of tea or coffee for breakfast. Seriously, who doesn't want a hot drink for breakfast?

The food was great, the rooms are really nice and the physio was amazing. I would give birth at North West again.
